Lunaz Reveals Electric Aston Martin DB6 Concept

Lunaz's latest concept bushes the boundaries of what eco-conscious materials can achieve.

By Kim Ayling

Lunaz Design – a luxury automobile upcycling operation based out of Silverstone, UK – has revealed its latest concept project: a fully electrified Aston Martin DB6.

Refurbished using a combination of eco-conscious materials that have never been seen on the road together before, the concept not only boldly pushes the boundaries of what sustainable motoring can look like, but also the perimeters of Lunaz’s creative design potential.

“Upcycling is a holistic, whole-vehicle process in which sustainability encompasses not only the clean-air powertrain but also the materials and finishes used in the interior,” says Lunaz founder David Lorenz. “We’ve seen significant interest from our clients in maximizing our use of sustainable alternatives to traditional leathers, veneers and fabrics.”

The interior incorporates a wide range of innovative materials and products, all carefully selected for their eco-conscious credentials, as well as their luxurious look and feel. The dashboard face and gear stick, for example, use an oil-based plastic alternative, made from a 100% natural egg- and nut-shell composite. When combined with an organic binder, this material can be manipulated to replicate the original DB6’s marble.

Other advanced materials used in Lunaz’s electric Aston Martin DB6 concept include an apple pomace – a by-product from the beverage industry – leather alternative; carpets made from regenerated nylon that was once fishing nets; a 54% recycled polyester, 35% new wool and 11% nylon upholstery ‘knit;’ and a corn and wood pulp based-fibre in a PU-style fabric for the door cards.

Durability and longevity remain significant concerns in the textile industry, particularly in relation to eco-conscious alternatives; Lunaz has foreseen this concern and prioritized hardy, durable materials with proven abrasion resistance.

The concept build is completed with Lunaz’s proprietary modular electric powertrain. Designed and built in-house, the powerful motor has 375 bhp with a range of up to 255 miles.

“This upcycling project provides a wonderful showcase for emerging materials and innovative products, which are opening up new possibilities across the luxury world. As this magnificent [Aston Martin] DB6 shows, we can create authentic, truly luxurious interiors worthy of the most famous marques using materials with the smallest possible environmental impact. These are very exciting times for us, our clients and our industry.”

While for now, the design remains a concept, Lunaz is keen to stress that it is production-ready, with several of the innovations already used across the brand’s other builds.
